Most people start life with a straight and flexible spine, like the person depicted on the left in the image above. The upper back is straight, shoulders and neck are relaxed and the chest is open, allowing the breath to flow with ease.
Unfortunately, with the years, we become more and more like the person on the right (just look around you!). The upper back becomes round and stiff. This pushes the shoulders upward, the head forward and there is strain in the neck. The chest caves in, restricting breathing. How can you feel relaxed in this situation?
It doesn’t have to be like this
In the Critical Alignment Yoga classes, we learn how to reverse (even better: to prevent) this development. With targeted exercises, breathing techniques and smart props (like the roll and the strap), we learn to relax tense muscles between the shoulder blades and restore the mobility of the vertebrae.
You then start make steps from the person on the right, back to the person on the left. As the he upper back straightens, the shoulders and neck will relax and the chest will re-open. The breath will circulate freely again. You will not only look better but also feel much more at ease.
