Many of us carry tension in the upper back without being fully aware of it. What we do feel are stiff shoulders, a stiff neck, and (over the long term) a stiff lower back. These are the areas that compensate for the lost mobility in the upper back. When the upper back is rounded, the chest also collapses, resulting in a loss of feelings of spaciousness. In other words, if the upper back is stiff, you often don’t feel it in the upper back itself, but rather experience symptoms in other parts of the body.
In this class, we will relax the upper back so that it can return to a more upright position. In this upright position, we will then strengthen the upper back. When the upper back moves more freely, the shoulders, neck, and lower back can also relax. A significant change also occurs in the front of the body: the chest opens up again, allowing you to experience feelings of spaciousness and lightness in your breath and body once more.
